OPPORTUNITIES FOR BIKE LANES

The 30th Street Pipeline project, which will replace water pipelines from Juniper Street to Polk Avenue in North park, is currently underway and resurfacing presents an opportunity to add improved bike facilities. A key effort of the City of San Diego’s Traffic Engineering Operations is to evaluate all resurfacing projects for opportunities to improve bike facilities through striping modifications.

30th Street Pipeline Replacement Project

Construction Timeline: April 2018-July 2020

Repaving will occur in phases after construction, beginning at Juniper Street and ending at Polk Avenue.

UPAS STREET TO JUNIPER STREET: CLASS IV OPTION

This section offers a Class IV bike lane on one or both sides of the
street. On-street parking could be removed depending on the number of bike lanes.

Physical separations would be added between the bicycle lane and passing traffic with special considerations taken at bus stops and driveways.

EL CAJON BOULEVARD TO UPAS STREET: CLASS II OPTION

The Class II option offers a standard painted bicycle lane on each side of the road, retains on-street parking spaces, and removes the center turn lane in mid-block locations.

Removal of the center turn lane would affect vehicles turning into driveways or vehicles that often use the center lanes for commercial loading and delivery services.

EL CAJON BOULEVARD TO UPAS STREET: CLASS IV OPTION

This Class IV option offers a standard painted bicycle lane on each side of the road and adds physical separation between bicyclists and passing traffic. This option maintains the center turn lane and removes on-street parking.

Separations and bollards would be added between the bicycle lane and the street with special considerations taken at bus stops and driveways.

SWITZER CANYON (OLIVE STREET TO MAPLE COURT)

This section offers standard painted bicycle lanes on both sides of the road and would remove all on-street parking. This design is in line with the beautification project outlined in the North Park Maintenance Assessment District (MAD).

PARKING CONVERSION GAINS

A total gain 73 parking spots around 30th Street will be gained by converting on-street parking into head-in parking. Streets: Myrtle, Dwight, Gunn, Capps, Polk, Ohio. Conversion occurring between March – May 2019.
