Meet Brittney, the owner of Home + Hound.
She loves seeing how people express their style within the walls in which they live. And if you’re anything like her, you’ve wondered why quality design and goods for dogs often conflict aesthetically. She thought, “Why can’t we embrace a lifestyle in which dogs and design dwell together harmoniously?” So she set out to combine her passions and create something that she felt was needed in her design-savvy, dog-centric community. Introducing Home + Hound, a brick-and-mortar shop located in the heart of North Park.
With a background of 10+ years working in fashion, marketing, and interior design, Brittney is able to curate well-edited, artful selections that are accessible and original. She thrives on helping individuals express their sense of style by blending textiles, accent furniture, decor and tabletop items, elevated dog accessories and more.
“Every day I am grateful to be able to do what I love for a living. This has truly become my dream job and I couldn’t do it without you – thank you!” – Brittney Garbani
Q&A:
What has surprised you most about the neighborhood after opening Home + Hound?
I think I was most surprised and really impressed by the strong small business community in North Park. Other business owners are genuinely interested in supporting you and helping in any way that they can. With Home + Hound being a small startup with a unique concept that may take longer to be recognized, I feel lucky that other business owners have been so welcoming and only want to see the shop do well for the success of everyone.
What is your favorite thing about owning a business in North Park?
My husband and I moved to California from Texas almost six years ago, and North Park was the kind of neighborhood I dreamt of living in when making the move; an urban area that’s eclectic in its people, shops, and restaurants, and a place that’s highly walkable, dog and bike-friendly too. With outdoor activities to enjoy all year round, there seems to always be a street fair, vintage flea, farmer’s market, arts festival or concert in the park to partake in. I couldn’t be happier living, working and playing in this growing area of San Diego that I call home. Finding the ideal location for my business right here on 30th Street has been an absolute dream come true.
Does Home & Hound work directly with Interior Designers or do you offer design guidance for the home renovator or decorator?
A lot of customers will show me photos and ask my opinion when selecting items, which I really enjoy. I like to learn more about their style and share tips I’ve picked up throughout my career. But I firmly believe that everyone is capable of putting together a space that they love, designer or not, all it takes is a little inspiration.
If you were to make a gift basket for your pups what would be your go-to items?
When choosing a gift for any dog, I like to go for a dog bandana since it’s a cute accessory that’s forgiving in fit, a stylish waste bag dispenser to help class up the cleanup, and a bag of healthy treats. These are fail-proof items that all dog lovers can appreciate, no matter the size or breed of their pet.
What is one item locals might not know you carry?
I often hear from passers-by that they think Home + Hound is just a pet shop – but it’s so much more! In-store you’ll find textiles like pillows and throws, decorative accessories like ceramics, indoor plants and planters, wall hangings and art, hand-poured candles, stationery, books, tabletop goods, and other handsome housewares. I also carry elevated dog accessories such as beds, bowls, collars and leashes, and other fun dog-themed items to enjoy.
