(San Diego, Calif. – August 1, 2024) – Bike enthusiasts and foodies will converge on North Park next Saturday, August 10th, for a day of learning and community building plus plant-based food at the Cargo Bike Challenge Course & Resilience Fair from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the North Park Vegan Market from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the North Park Mini Park, located at 3812 29th St, San Diego, 92104.
The Cargo Bike Challenge Course & Resilience Fair, presented by Ebike Cargo & Velocker, will feature a disaster relief trials-style bike course, a bike demo zone, engaging bike-related activities for adults and kids throughout the day, as well as the opportunity to learn essential skills for surviving disasters and assisting others during a crisis.
“This event will demonstrate how cargo bikes can serve as a crucial tool in disaster scenarios where traditional infrastructure may fail,” said Brian Hoffman, organizer of the Cargo Bike Challenge Course & Resilience Fair. “It is part of a broader movement that began in Portland in 2012 and has since spread to dozens of cities worldwide, building a community of prepared and trained citizens ready to assist in times of need.”
The cargo bike challenge course, which starts at 9:00 a.m. and requires pre-registration, is designed to simulate potential emergency scenarios following a disaster. Riders’ scores will be based on the amount of cargo they can transport as well as the time it takes them to complete the 14-mile course.
In the Demo Zone, local bike shops and manufacturers will showcase different styles of cargo bikes, e-bikes, and the latest bike accessories. Relief organizations, including the Red Cross and the San Diego Mountain Rescue Team, will present sessions on bicycle mobility, logistics, and emergency response.
The North Park Vegan Market, presented by Vegan Food Popup Events on the 2nd Saturday of every month, will have vendors set up next to the Mini Park, on 29th St and both sides of North Park Way between 30th St and Granada Ave, with a large selection of eats and treats, as well as local products and services from over 60 businesses.
The event features a rotating lineup of diverse vendors from San Diego, Orange County and LA., offering an international assortment of food and beverages, including options from African, Chinese, Mexican, Argentinian, Egyptian, Italian, Mozambican, Korean, and Pacific Islander cuisines. In between bites, attendees can shop award-winning hot sauces, all-natural skincare, eco-friendly home decor, unique jewelry, and more.
