The City of San Diego (the city) is starting the construction of the 30th Street Pipeline Replacement A Project. The City has more than 3,250 miles of water pipeline to provide services to its businesses and residences. Some pipelines are more than 100 years old, deteriorating, and in need of replacement, repair, and upgrades. To avoid future service disruptions, such as water main breaks, the aging pipelines are being replaced or rehabilitated. The new pipelines will bring the existing water mains up to modern standards, accommodate community growth, and reduce maintenance requirements.

Project Overview

The project will replace approximately 1,300 lineal feet (LF) of existing 12-inch water main with new 16-inch water main and installation of 300 LF of new 16-inch water main along University Avenue between Oregon Street and 30th Street.

This project will provide a more reliable water supply and operational flexibility. The project will use best management practices (BMPs) for storm drain inlet protection, and restoration of disturbed areas to their original condition. The contractor will resurface streets impacted by construction activities. The project will improve the quality of life in these communities and make the best use of taxpayer funds.

What’s Happening This Month

  • Crews will start installing temporary highlines at University Avenue and Oregon Street, working east from that starting point. The highline system will provide full water service until the new water main line is installed, tested and accepted by the City.

Please remember to always exercise caution near the work zone and note that:

  • Road closures, detours, and restricted access may be implemented during working hours.
  • Speeds will be reduced in the construction area.
  • Safety measures will be implemented to ensure bicyclists and pedestrians will be allowed access throughout the project.
  • Access to homes, businesses, and emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
  • Traffic control will be in place and is subject to change. Other potential construction impacts may include noise, dirt, dust, and traffic.

Any work that requires water service shut-offs will only occur after advance notice to residents and stakeholders via door hangers.
