Sixth Annual Spring Festival Celebrates Arts, Culture, and Entertainment

On May 19, 2002 the Sixth Annual North Park Spring Festival filled University Avenue with fun, food, and entertainment.

As usual the Spring Festival featured international foods, arts and crafts, five stages of entertainment, and a premiere children’s area. This year the Spring Festival took off in new innovative directions. Two of the entertainment stages were transformed with new themes. One was a World Music Stage that showcased music from a variety of cultures including drumming from Ghana, Cantonese Opera, a didgeridoo player, traditional blues, and Balinese Gamelan.

Another stage was hosted by the San Diego Artistic Community–a local non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of San Diego’s local arts scene. Their stage featured local musicians and painters sharing space on the same stage.

Returning this year to the Spring Festival was the Sycuan Dance stage. And like last year this unique attraction captivated the audience throughout the day with its stimulating blend of dance styles from all over the world.

New to the Spring Festival this year was Artsparks, a innovative area of children's activities.  Artsparks was hosted by the San Diego Children's Museum and Stone Paper Scissors.  Children of all ages were invited to participate in the creation of masks, rubbings, clay formations, and murals.  The highlight of Artsparks was portable wall-sized murals that will cover local buildings undergoing renovation and remodeling.  One of these murals focuses on different cultural interpretations of horses.

The Sixth Annual Spring Festival was a tremendous success, and with this being the most distinctive year to date, the Spring Festival attracted over 35,000 people with its diverse blend of activities, food, and entertainment.  The Spring Festival is truly a celebration for everyone.
