The Twelfth Annual Festival
of the Arts Had a Huge Turnout!

May 2008 – The Twelfth Annual North Park Festival of the Arts on May
18 was wildly successful this year. The crowd was estimated at
over 30,000 people. The unique blend of arts, culture, and
entertainment created an event highlighting North Park’s diversity and
dedication to the arts.

The Kids Art
Beat featured the Art Miles Mural Project, Sophia Isadora Academy of
Circus Arts, and San Diego Jr. Theater! Activities also included
arts and crafts, and a storyteller. The Kids
Art Beat was sponsored by the Barona Band of Mission Indians and
Ascent Real Estate.

This year featured the new addition of the Festival
of Beers sponsored by San Diego CityBeat and the San Diego Music
Foundation.

The Main Street Stage (formerly the Music in the Park Stage) was
sponsored by Cox Communications.
Crowds were drawn to the energy and enthusiasm of the local bands that
came out to play. The Festival of Beers, presented by San Diego
CityBeat and the San Diego Music Foundation, was adjacent to the
stage.
The World of Latin-American Music Stage was lively
and colorful throughout the day, with music and dance from a variety
of Latin American countries. Large music ensembles, and dance troupes
attracted crowds and enhanced the festive atmosphere of the event.
The Beats & Eats Stage also featured local bands
with a more acoustic sound, as well as spoken word poets, beat boxers,
rappers, singers, and storytellers. Festival goers dined on
treats from the nearby food court while enjoying the eclectic array of
entertainment.

The
Dance Stage was once again wildly successful, due in no small part to the hard work of Kathryn Irey. She
worked all year long to develop this stage and create a truly unique
attraction that is unrivaled anywhere in San Diego County.
Art was ever
present throughout the event. Stilt walkers dressed
in colorful costumes made their way through the crowds, adding to the
festive atmosphere, while performance artists of all sorts captured the
imagination. From the juried artists on University Avenue to the artists
and demonstrations throughout Ray Street, the festival was abuzz with activity
where artists and craftspeople demonstrated their wares.
Congratulations to all of our juried arts winners:

This event was
possible because of the many volunteers that assisted on May 18, and
of course, the Festival Committee worked hard all year to make
this day possible. Kudos to Daniel Bess, the Chair of the Festival Committee for leading this dedicated team.
