Economic
Restructuring
|
|
The purpose of the Economic Restructuring committee is
to strengthen the district's existing economic base while finding ways to
expand it to meet new opportunities -- and challenges from outlying
development. Some of the issues that the Economic Restructuring
Committee is concerned with are:
|
-
Business Recruitment: Providing direction on
the mix of business types in recruiting new businesses to downtown
North Park. Encouraging the arrival of businesses that would
make North Park's Arts, Culture, and
Entertainment district more vital. And the retention of
essential neighborhood services such as banks, hardware stores, etc.
-
Business Assistance: Developing assistance
to businesses to improve business planning, efficiency, marketing, and
promotion. One project of the Committee was Business
Fundamentals. This was a program where a consultant worked
with two businesses in the district to assist them in the streamlining
and marketing of their businesses. The Economic Restructuring
Committee is also working to coordinate business assistance workshops
with other neighborhoods and
The
Small Business Development & International Trade Center.
-
City of Villages: Assisting in
business-developing aspects of the
City
of Villages strategy. New projects under the
North
Park Pilot Village should speed the introduction of new
residential customers with more money to spend, and new storefront
spaces. The Committee will help fill these spaces with exciting
businesses that will add to the life of downtown North Park.
-
Permit Streamlining: The Economic
Restructuring Committee is always working with businesses and City
departments to streamline and reduce the costs of obtaining required
city permits. Last year the Committee challenged the City's
Development Services Department. In response to North Park Main
Street's protests of Development Services the department has begun to improve
their assistance to small business.

In addition to the addressing the issues with
Development Services the Economic Restructuring Committee also engages in ordinance review, development review, and many other
projects.
